Living in the big city it can be tough not having a yard to play around in. So I came up with a solution of collecting wooden vegetable/fruit containers that the stores throw in the trash. Also I collect big rice bags to put the soil in. Usually I buy some cheap soil mix at at local market, and it is not very rich. So I purchase a bag of the good stuff and add it to the cheap soil. Not the best, but most of the plants do pretty good. If I see a big construction site, I will often do a recon mission and see if it is possible to get some free soil. So off I go in the night with my buckets and scoop.

Walking through the neighborhood one day I came across a nice small wooden box and took it to my apartment and planted some of my favorite herbs in it. Such as basil and oregano. They really do nice and I love cooking with fresh herbs.

I store my water in discarded 7 liter water jugs to allow the chlorine to evaporate. Plus I have 5 gallon buckets that I put my organic waste in to compost. One day I made a mistake and flipped my 5 gallon bucket upside down and the fluid sealed the rim where air could enter and all my worms died. Sorry.

Now my vine type flowering plant posed a dilemma on how to let it climb or attach to something. So I took some heavy twine and attached one end to the bottom of the wooden container and the other end I stuck under my corrugated roof and tied to a piece of wood.

Shopping in a local flower market I bought some really cheap bamboo and took it home. It has really done well and I have since divided it in half and now have two bamboo plants.

One of the big problems is the plants get to much of the scorching sunlight and slowly the bamboo is proving itself useful as a shade plant for some of the more delicate plants.

Living in the city you start to feel detached from mother nature. A container garden allows you to bring a little mother nature back into your life. Plus it is nice to sit back and admire.

I found this weird looking dried plant on a walk. It reminded me of a bird and I stuck it in my garden for display.
