Worst case of travelers bad luck.
Sharing a taxi ride with a fellow traveler after crossing the border into Nicaragua at night. My fellow traveler forgets to grab his backpack and the taxi takes off with the loot of the day. I'm really feeling his pain and he says he needs to find an ATM and get some money. So I walk with him to a bank ATM and watch his back as he uses the ATM. Suddenly he starts freaking out telling me the ATM has eaten his card. Plus he never got any cash. Double whammy in 20 minutes.
I'm starting to look at him with my head tilted wondering what the hell is going on. Well he fiddles with the bank ATM for a few minutes and then writes some telephone numbers down to call the next day. We start walking and he begins confessing that yesterday some guys tried to rob him with knife, but he took off running and got away.
Our conversation turned serious as I stated whether he had considered abandoning his travels and heading home. I'm convinced at this point the guy is bad luck. He asks me what hotel I'm going to stay at and I tell him I'm not sure and wish him better luck in the days ahead.
