There are around 2,500 varieties of potatoes native to the Peruvian Andes. The potato is part of the Peruvian culinary culture and was domesticated more than 8000 years ago. Go here for the full story.

I don’t know the whole history of the potato in Peru, but I do know the Peruvian potato is very nice to eat. A kilo can be bought in the market for under 2 Nuevo Sol. French fries are very nice with certain Peruvian potatoes and I usually sauté them in sunflower oil.

Down near the Victoria section of Central Lima on Avenida Aviacion you will find a nice market that sells a fabulous selection of native Peruvian potatoes. In the regular markets you can sometimes find the exotic here in the city, but most often you will find a smaller selection.
